For AMD 4 I wanted to find some
examples of German music, preferably jazz. I found quite a few songs on
YouTube, but it was quite boring compared to the jazz forms that appeared out
of New Orleans in the 1920’s. Instead of continuing a search for such songs I
decided to watch a video called Das Boot.
Das Boot has nothing to do with German culture except for a German accent that the actor appears to imitate. The commercial is for a giant beer boot glass. The glass is versatile in numerous ways, it can be put to use.
What made this commercial funny was the strange sense in which it portrayed Germans. The behavior of the actor is extremely unorthodox. He is wearing a Hans Gretel outfit that one would see at an Oktoberfest outing. He is eating everything and anything out of the boot. This includes cheese, butter, and of course consumption of large amounts of beer. Though not intentionally, the commercial affirms a partial stereotype of Germans in which they are portrayed wearing Oktoberfest outfits, drinking large amounts of beer, and speaking in the German accent. Seeing as how we just studied German stereotypes two classes ago, I thought this might be relevant.
